TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Yogyakarta Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that the rainy season in the province is expected to come 20 to 30 days later than usual in the past 30 years from 1991 to 2020.

Head of the BMKG Yogyakarta’s Climatology Station, Reni Kraningtyas, said on Thursday, September 14, that the rainy season in the region will likely start in the first ten days (dasarian) of November to December 2023.

Kulon Progo Regency is predicted to have the season earlier than other areas in the province. “The rainy season will come first in the northern area of Kulon Progo,” she added.

The area includes Samigaluh and Kalibawang Districts, followed by several sub-districts of Sleman Regency in the second dasarian namely Turi, Pakem, Cangkringan, northern Sleman, northern Ngaglik, northern Tempel, and a small part of Ngemplak.

Meanwhile, the area predicted to see the last of the rainy season is Yogyakarta City.

Reni also said that the peak of the rainy season in Yogyakarta was expected in February 2024.

Drought hits 21 sub-districts of Yogyakarta

Previously, BMKG issued an early drought warning for 21 sub-districts in Yogyakarta. They are Banguntapan, Bantul, Dlingo, Imogiri, Kasihan, Pundong, Sedayu, and Sewon in Bantul Regency; Gedangsari, Girisubo, Karangmojo, Ngawen, Playen, Ponjong, and Wonosari in Gunungkidul Regency; and Berbah, Cangkringan, Depok, Gamping, Kalasan, and Sleman in Sleman Regency.

“The areas under the alert status [of drought] have experienced more than 61 days without rain with low rainfall forecast of less than 20 mm per day,” said Reni.
