TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Acting Governor of West Java Bey Machmudin inspected the burning Sarimukti landfill today, September 12, 2023. Starting today, Sarimukti landfill emergency status has been taken over by the provincial government. The fire that occurred in the Sarimukti landfill has been ongoing since August 19, 2023, and shows no signs of stopping.

Bey mentioned that the provincial government decided to extend the fire emergency status in the Sarimukti landfill until September 24, 2023. Previously, the emergency status was implemented by West Bandung Regent from August 22, 2023, to September 11, 2023.

Several new measures will be implemented to tackle the issue at hand, Bey said, including developing new alternative roads to ease access to the hotspots, artificial rain, and piling the burning areas up with mud. "We target the fire to be extinguished in two weeks," Bey mentioned.

The Acting Governor mentioned that the garbage pile in the Sarimukti landfill reached 50-70 meters in height across 16.5 hectares of land, raising difficulties in extinguishing the fire.

According to Bey, the provincial government has prepared an emergency budget amounting to Rp5.8 billion to combat the fire. West Java government also prepared an emergency landfill with 23,000 tonnes capacity for residents of Bandung City, Bandung Regency, Cimahi City, and West Bandung Regency. However, Bey also urged the government of the areas benefiting from the emergency landfill to reduce the amount of waste distributed to the landfill.

Bey asked the residents to support the measures taken by the government by sorting out their garbage at home. "I ask the residents to reduce their waste from home by sorting out their own garbage," he concluded.
