TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Dubai Police rescued two Indonesian migrant workers who were held in a prostitution ring at 4:00 am on Monday, July 10. The two workers, IOW from Cianjur and SP from Serang, are scheduled to provide statements to the police to assist with the ongoing investigation.

The Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry released a statement on July 11, stating that the rescue effort was done by coordinating various parties, including the Indonesian Consulate General in Dubai which gathered the information needed to trace the whereabouts of IOW, a 39-year-old mother of two.

The Indonesian Consulate General in Dubai has met with IOW and SP at the Dubai Police Headquarters who are both in good health. For now, they will be accommodated at the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children facilities.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry urges the public to be wary of offers to work in the Middle East as domestic workers, as there is potential for sexual exploitation.

As of the publishing time of this report, Indonesia still implements a moratorium on sending domestic workers to individual users in the Middle East. Throughout 2023, the Indonesian Representative in the United Arab Emirates has repatriated 293 problematic migrant workers to Indonesia.
