TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Admiralty House, Sydney, Tuesday, June 4. Among a number of topics discussed by the two heads of states was electric vehicles.

According to Jokowi, there are several priorities that must be carried out jointly by the two countries. Indonesia and Australia, he said, must build more substantive and strategic economic cooperation through the joint development of electric vehicle battery production.

"Indonesia and Australia must build a more substantive and strategic economic cooperation through the joint production of EV batteries," Jokowi told reporters after meeting PM Albanese yesterday.

Jokowi also said he was "happy to return to Australia. Since last year's annual leaders meeting in Bogor, there have been many positive developments, and we are grateful for Australia's commitment."

In February, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartanto witnessed the signing of the Action Plan for the implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the government of the state of Western Australia and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin).

At the time, Airlangga said that Indonesia and Australia are working together to become major players in the global supplier of electric vehicle batteries.

"The signing of this action plan is important to seize opportunities and bring together parties involved in the mineral sector—including battery raw materials—with parties to support the financing, in order to realize concrete cooperation," Airlangga said.
