Jokowi Offers Australian Investors New Capital, EV Battery Projects

TEMPO.CO, Sydney - Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at a meeting with CEOs of Australian companies today, July 4, invited them to invest in a number of the country's priority sectors. This is part of the President’s agenda during the three-day trip to Sydney.
“Indonesia has high potential as an investment destination with a wealth of natural resources, demographic bonuses, a large market, and maintained economic and political stability,” Jokowi said in a written statement received in Jakarta.
One of the priority sectors offered is the industrial downstream. He said that Indonesia and Australia have great prospects to integrate in developing the electric vehicle battery industry.
“Indonesia eyes to start producing EV batteries next year, and produce one million electric cars and 3.2 million electric motorcycles in 2035,” he remarked.
Besides, he revealed that Indonesia has tremendous potential in the green energy sector with a potential of 434 gigawatts from wind, water, geothermal, biofuels, and solar power.
“(Currently) a 30,000-hectare green industrial park is being built,” he said.
The state head also explained that the development of Indonesia’s new capital city or IKN with the concept of a nature-based smart city had started. Investment opportunities in diverse fields have been wide open.
“The investment value reaching US$25 billion is widely open in the education, health, energy, and other sectors,” he said, adding that the number of student admissions increases by around 20 percent every year.
“Nearly two million Indonesians still travel abroad for medical treatment. This is a great opportunity for investment in this field [of health],” Jokowi said.
