TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) chairperson Rahmat Bagja stated that his side has no problem with President Joko Widodo or Jokowi’s intervention in the 2024 election. Bagja said that the matter is difficult to be separated from the president.
He also said that Bawaslu will not mind if the President attends political party events. “Regarding intervention, I think all of them will do so if they have a preference about who will continue their work program,” Bagja said before reporters in his office at the Bawaslu building, on Wednesday, June 21, 2023.
According to him, there is no law regulating such interference as long as they don't use state facilities. However, he acknowledged ethical consequences related to this, and that is evaluated by the community.
“Bawaslu, at this point, does not [bother over president meddling in the election] because he is the head of state, he is also a member of a political party. That's fine,” Bagja confirmed.
In a press conference on June 6, 2023, Jokowi stated that he will intervene in the upcoming presidential election in order to ensure that the contest runs well without any issues that could endanger the country. He argued that the interference is his moral responsibility as a president.
