TEMPO.CO, Bengkulu - Bengkulu Governor Rohidin Mersyah has said that several South Korean investors have expressed interest in investing in the shrimp farming business in the province.

"They are interested in exploring the export of Bengkulu seafood, including farmed shrimp and other fishery products, as well as processed food," he stated on Thursday.

The investors showed their interest after witnessing the investment potential in Bengkulu province during their visit on May 31, 2023.

Governor Mersyah mentioned that the potential investors expressed their desire to develop shrimp farming businesses and other marine-related opportunities due to the high demand for shrimp and other seafood commodities in South Korea.

Bengkulu, with its 575-kilometer coastline facing the Indian Ocean, possesses abundant marine resources that can be utilized and processed.

Apart from shrimp farming and fisheries, the investors also explored potential ventures in golf courses, hotels, tourism, and even cosmetics.

"That was our first meeting, and we were able to convey what the province has to offer," Mersyah stated.

The investors also assessed the necessary supporting infrastructure and connectivity that should be developed in Bengkulu, he added.

On Wednesday, a group of investors led by Kim Soo-il, CEO of Busan Indonesia Center (BIC), visited Bengkulu. They examined several potential business locations in the province.

"A golf course holds potential for development in Bengkulu to attract South Koreans who enjoy playing golf, and there is great potential in fisheries and shrimp farms due to the high demand for shrimp in South Korea," Kim said.

The Investment and One-Stop Integrated Service Office (DPMPTSP) of Bengkulu reported that the investment realization from January to October 2022 in Bengkulu reached Rp6.2 trillion (US$415 million), accounting for 75 percent of the 2022 target.

Foreign investment in Bengkulu predominantly comes from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, China, and Singapore.
