BMKG Logs 71 Banten Earthquakes Centered on Sunda Strait in 24 Hours

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 71 earthquakes jolting Banten within about 24 hours since the first occurred last Wednesday at a magnitude of 5.2.

The main quake had its epicenter in the Sunda Strait with a relatively shallow hypocenter. It was allegedly triggered by the activity of the Ujung Kulon Fault.

The first quake occurred on Wednesday, at 11:24 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). As of Thursday afternoon, May 11, at 12:00 WIB, the agency detected a total of 71 quakes in the area. The BMKG Region II of South Tangerang, Banten, reported that the highest magnitude amounted to 5.1.

The main quake was felt in Pandeglang with an intensity scale of III MMI, Sukabumi, Lebak, Serang, and Cilegon with an intensity scale of II - III MMI, as well as in South Tangerang and Bogor with an intensity scale of II MMI.

In addition to the series of earthquakes in Banten, the agency detected the latest quake in South Sulawesi measuring 2.3 magnitudes at 12:35 WIB, a 3.1-magnitude quake in West Nusa Tenggara at 13:22 WIB, and a 3.0-magnitude quake in Central Sulawesi at 13:22 WIB.
