Police Yet to Know Cause of Death of MUI HQ Shooter

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Criminal Investigation Directorate of Metro Jaya Police has yet to confirm the cause of death of Mustopa NR, 60 years old, the man who opened fire at the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in Central Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon, May 2.

“We haven't concluded [the cause of the suspect's death] yet. Once again, don’t get it wrong, we haven't concluded it yet,” said the Metro Police’s Director of the General Criminal Investigation Unit for Polda Metro Jaya, Senior Commissioner Hengki Haryadi, during a press conference at the Menteng Police, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, May 2, 2023, as quoted from Antara.

Hengki said that his side would conduct an autopsy on Tuesday evening at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital, East Jakarta. “There will be an autopsy tonight starting at 21:00,” he said.

Hengki explained that the results of the autopsy will reveal the cause of the suspect's death.

“Lampung Police also launched a preliminary investigation on this. His wife was also questioned, [the shooter] has a history of heart disease and asthma,” he said, adding that the drugs were found in the suspect's bag which was secured as evidence at the crime scene.

“There were 11 capsules of asthma medication and other medicines. This is currently being investigated by the Metro Jaya Police’s health unit,” Hengki said.

Previously, Central Jakarta Police Chief Commissioner Komarudin explained that the perpetrator who is a resident of Lampung was arrested by officers in an unconscious condition after attacking the MUI HQ.

The perpetrator was then taken to the nearest police station and remained unconscious so the police took him to the Menteng Health Center. “The doctor stated that the perpetrator was dead,” he said.
