TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is currently observing the movement of the 98S tropical cyclone seed over the Timor Sea, southeast of Kupang in Indonesia’s Eastern hemisphere.

The agency found the cyclone seed has moved with an average speed of 30 knots and a minimum air pressure of 997 mb, and is moving towards the west-southwest. BMKG also believes this seed has a high probability of turning into a full-on cyclone in the next 24 hours.

The indirect impact from this cyclone seed will most likely be in the form of moderate to heavy rain in NTB, NTT, Maluku, and Papua; strong winds in NTB, NTT, Maluku, and Papua; and waves as high as 2.5-4 meters in Wakatobi waters, Flores Sea, southern waters of Sumba Island, Sawu Island waters, Kupang-Rote Island waters, Indian Ocean south of Kupang-Rote Island and the Banda Sea.

Convergence areas were observed extending from the Malacca Strait to Jambi, from southern Sumatra to the Sunda Strait, from the western Indian Ocean to West Sumatra to Lampung, and from the southern Indian Ocean to Central Java to East Java.

Meanwhile, the confluence extends from the Java Sea to the Flores Sea and from East Java to NTT. These conditions, according to BMKG, can increase the growth potential of rain clouds around the seeds of tropical cyclones/cyclonic circulation and along the low-level jet/convergence/confluency areas.
