TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Agency (FAO) and the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) announced the results of a Digital Village survey in Indonesia, especially West Java, during a workshop on the 'Digital Village Ecosystem' held at Bandung's Hotel eL Royale on Tuesday, 7 March.

The survey results show that villages in West Java are quite progressive in their use of digital innovation. The survey is part of the Digital Village Initiative (DVI) program under the auspices of the '1000 Digital Village Initiative' platform launched by the FAO.

Yani Nurhadryani, head of the Digital Village Survey Team, said that in West Java Province they had conducted field surveys in 17 digital villages.

"The 17 villages were grouped based on four digital innovation sectors namely agriculture, fishery, livestock and e-government," said Yani in her presentation.

In addition to the four sectors, digitization is also applied in community and economic activities, smart farming, information systems, agricultural food marketing, e-commerce, social services, financial services, and local infrastructure.

According to the data, e-governance is the most widely implemented type of innovation in the villages.

"Based on the maturity indicator level on the technology development aspect, 48 percent out of 100 samples of digital village innovations are in the Fully Deployed category. When viewed from the level of maturity indicators on the distribution aspect, 40 percent are in the Scale-up category," Yani said.

The 1000 Digital Village Initiative or DVI was developed by FAO in the Asia Pacific region as a forum to share experiences and provide technical support for digital innovation. It is a program that supports inclusive, gender-sensitive rural development and sustainable agri-food transformation to meet the 2030 Agenda goals.

FAO DVI follows a country-led, user-centered, holistic digital ecosystem approach for digital village development, allowing the local context to dictate the modalities pursued.
