TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 5.2-magnitude earthquake that jolted the southern region of Lebak, Banten, on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at 07:35:50 local time was quite destructive as it damaged school buildings and injured students who were studying at classes.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency’s (BMKG) head of the quake and tsunami center, Daryono, shared data based on the monitoring in Kabandungan District, Sukabumi Regency, or precisely in Cisalimar of Cipeuteuy Village.

“The Cisalimar Elementary School building was lightly damaged. The ceilings of classrooms for 2nd grade and 3rd grade and the office room were damaged,” according to the data results on Tuesday.

An 8-year-old boy, a 2nd-grade student at SDN Cisalimar, suffered a minor injury to his left leg due to being hit by the ceiling.

Officers of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency along with village/sub-district officials, Babinsa, Bhabinkamtibmas, POLPP, TAGANA, and volunteers visited the affected areas and provided treatment to victims of minor injuries. Teachers and students were asked to remain vigilant.

The school assisted by volunteers cleaned up the debris scattered in the damaged room.

“Taking into account the location of the epicenter and the hypocenter, it was a shallow quake caused by the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate subducting under the Eurasian Plate,” said Daryono.

Based on the analysis of the source mechanism, the quake had a mechanism of oblique thrust.

The shaking was quite strong in Bayah, Banjarsari, and Tamanjaya areas with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI. It was also felt in Serang, Pandenglang, Panggarangan, Malingping, Ciptagetar, Cikeusik, Labuan, Tangerang, Panimbang, and Cinangka with MMI III level.

The Banten earthquake also sent tremors with an intensity scale of II-III MMI to areas of South Tangerang, Bogor, Sukabumi, Tangerang, Cianjur, and West Bandung, and an intensity scale of II MMI to Jakarta, Depok, and Cibubur.
