TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected an earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter Scale that jolted Bayah of Banten this Thursday night, February 2, 2023, at 19:45 western Indonesian time (WIB).

Head of the agency’s quake and tsunami center, Daryono, estimated that the quake was triggered by the activity of the Cimandiri Fault until the Indian Ocean. This prediction was based on the quake’s epicenter which was in the sea, 40 kilometers southwest of Bayah, and at a depth of 25 kilometers.

“This is a shallow quake,” said Daryono in a written statement.

The shaking was felt in Bayah, Malingping, Ciracap, and Surade areas with an intensity scale of III MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity). The agency also mapped weaker tremors in Sukabumi, Cianjur, Pelabuhan Ratu, Cipanas, and Lebak areas.

“Until now there have been no reports of damaged buildings as a result of the quake,” said Daryono in his statement. There was also no aftershock detected as of 20:00 local time.

This earthquake in Bayah occurred 25 minutes after the quake in Pesisir Barat of Lampung. It was recognized at 4.7 magnitudes and produced shaking up to MMI level III. The quake was centered at sea, 57 kilometers southeast of the regency, and at a depth of 25 kilometers.
