TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 shook East Kalimantan's Berau Regency at 01:24 on Wednesday, 25 January. According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter was located 105 kilometers southeast of Berau or a depth of 14 kilometers.

Although the earthquake was mild, this was a rare occurrence. Compared to other islands in Indonesia, in Kalimantan earthquakes are a rarity.

"Based on reports from our colleagues on duty and the BPBD team in the East Kalimantan region, the earthquake was not felt," BMKG head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono said.

The location of the earthquake was at the Mangkalihat Fault, which is one of East Kalimantan's three fault structures after Maratua and Paternoster.

According to Daryono, in 2019 the Maratua Fault and Mangkalihat Fault in the Berau Regency and East Kutai Regency areas were still very active. BMKG recorded seismic activities that were quite high and formed clusters of distribution of epicenters trending west-east.

The day before, January 24, a series of earthquakes shook numerous parts of Indonesia. In several areas, there were even hundreds of aftershocks such as in Jayapura 811 times, Cianjur 487 times and the Maluku Sea 162 times. But Kalimantan was spared.
