TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Last year, the police traffic corps (Korlantas) proposed installing a chip on a vehicle's registration plates. This step was taken to quell the use of fake registration plates, which are currently being used by drivers to avoid tickets during the odd-even policies.

However, according to the Director of Registration and Identification (Dirregident) of the police traffic corps, Brigadier general Yusri Yunus, the application for license plates with this chip is still not valid this year. Currently, the police traffic corps is focused on implementing white-coloured vehicle registration plates in all parts of Indonesia.

"The chips will not be implemented this year, the idea is still in the planning stage. The chips will be utilised after the change on the registration plate colour has been carried out," Yusri said, quoted from the NTMC Polri website today, Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

Yusri mentioned that Indonesia would soon implement these chipped vehicle registration plates in the next few years. This is because, according to him, plates with chip technology such as Radio Frequency Identification or RFID have already been implemented in several countries around the world.

"We hope that it will be implemented in one or two years because we need a budget. If there is (the budget), we will use it for its purpose," he said.

Yusri also revealed that the use of a chip on the vehicle registration plate could facilitate access to vehicle data by officers or through electronic ticket cameras. Thus, vehicles that violate traffic can be swiftly identified.

"So that all the data from the vehicle is all there, data on the vehicle that has had an accident, has ever violated traffic, how many times has it been fined, it's all will be there," he said.

In implementing these chips in vehicle registration plates, the police traffic corps is also collaborating with several companies in the toll road sector, so that access through toll gates becomes more manageable.

"Hopefully we will get a budget later so we can implement the technology, this is a must because other countries have already utilised RFID," he said.
