TEMPO.CO, Cianjur - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) announced an increase in the number of dead victims of the earthquake in Cianjur, West Java. The agency head Suharyanto said the fatalities as of Wednesday, November 23, 2022, reached 271.

The agency found four more victims today. Three of them were found dead while the other one survived. “The data is compiled from reports that arrived at 17:00 WIB (western Indonesian time),” said Suharyanto at a press conference.

He also said that the data received by the agency today did not include the dead victims who were immediately buried by their respective families.

“So tomorrow morning, we will collect data on residents who died and were immediately buried,” he added.

In addition, the agency reported that 40 people are still missing. Most of them come from Cugenang, the hardest-hit area of the earthquake. “We have coordinated with the district heads regarding reports of missing residents,” Suharyanto told reporters.

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Cianjur on Monday afternoon, November 21, 2022, followed by hundreds of aftershocks to date. It was destructive as it caused landslides and severe damage to thousands of buildings.
