TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT PLN (Persero) and Sumitomo Corporation are collaborating to accelerate the energy transition in Indonesia. The two companies are conducting a joint study on transferring coal power plant (PLTU) assets and developing new renewable energy (EBT) generators.

The collaboration is established through a Principles Agreement signed by the PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo and Sumitomo Corporation CEO Masayuki Hyodo, witnessed by Indonesia Chief of Presidential Staff Moeldoko and Japan Ambassador Kenji Kanasugi during the G20 Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali, Sunday.

Moeldoko said the collaboration between PLN and Sumitomo is their commitment to reducing carbon emissions. "This cooperation needs to be developed in a larger context to build a stronger relationship with Indonesia," Moeldoko said.

PLN Director Darmawan Prasodjo said the cooperation between PLN and Sumitomo is a new kind of collaboration. This collaboration will lead to studies for the early retirement of PLTU by exchanging, developing, constructing, operating, and selling electricity as well as investing in the green industry.

"This collaboration shows the world how the energy transition strategy previously seemed fragmented, today the transition is carried out through collaboration," Prasodjo explained.

New renewable energy (NRE) generators will soon replace fossil fuel generators that are currently operating, and in turn, increase the national clean energy mix.

"We know we have to change too. We can't bear this burden alone. The only way to progress is through collaboration. Collaboration in technology, strategy, policy, and investment,” Prasodjo added.

Sumitomo Corporation CEO Masayuki Hyodo feels very honored to receive extraordinary support to contribute to Indonesia's energy transition efforts. “Now is the time to take steps forward, addressing climate change issues. This issue is urgent for humanity worldwide. Not only Indonesia but also Japan," he said.

Masayuki added collaboration with PLN would be a step forward in the energy transition. He is optimistic that the cooperation between PLN and Sumitomo is a proactive move toward CO2 emission reduction. "We are optimistic that this agenda will give hope to the community and many stakeholders in Indonesia," he concluded.
