TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Being a mother is not always about joy. Sometimes it is a cry out of pain both physically and mentally. Many studies find that women undergo significant changes after giving birth.
Cited from Times of India, here are four changes in women as they enter parenthood:
- Changes in the brain
According to a research report published in Scientific American, the maternal brain changes several times. “Virtually all female mammals, from rats to monkeys to humans, undergo fundamental behavioral changes during pregnancy and motherhood,” says the report.
It is found that the dramatic hormonal fluctuations that occur during pregnancy, birth, and lactation may remodel the female brain. They increase the size of neurons in some areas and produce structural changes in others.
- Physical changes
Hormonal fluctuations, carrying a baby, and lactation trigger physical changes in women. During lactation, a woman’s bones will lose minerals that make her more vulnerable to weakness and infections. Although things get back to normalcy after the kid weans, it affects the kidneys and other major organs to function due to the fluctuation in calcium levels in the body.
- Social changes
Society never stops expecting the high of a mother. Women are always expected to groom a child, a family, and themselves.
- Nervous breakdown
Studies find that every mother goes through a nervous breakdown albeit some do not feel it as they are buried under societal pressures.
Things have indeed changed after motherhood. The social conditioning and the physical and mental changes lead to big changes in the mother which apparently go unrecognized and are barely talked about.
