TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo or Jokowi was scheduled to meet with Gianni Infantino, the President of the International Football Federation or FIFA, at the Jakarta State Palace today, October 18, 2022. The meeting plan has been announced since last week after the Kanjuruhan tragedy in Malang, East Java.
“The President will receive the FIFA President at the State Palace at 12:00,” the Palace informed.
As previously reported, one of the agendas at the meeting will be about the national football transformation. Besides, after the Kanjuruhan tragedy on October 1, 2022, he claimed that FIFA had sent a letter to the Indonesian government that it would not impose sanctions on the country.
“Based on the letter, thank God, Indonesian football is not sanctioned by FIFA,” said Jokowi.
Zainudin Amali, Youth and Sports Minister and deputy chair of the Joint Independent Fact Finding Team (TGIPF), stated that the team's recommendations regarding the tragic incident would be reported to FIFA.
The recommendation had been given to the President last Friday, highlighting that stakeholders denied responsibility for the tragedy One of the points in the report is the throwing of responsibilities between stakeholders.
The TGIPF also explained a number of mistakes made by the Indonesian Football Association PSSI and PT LIB. In its recommendation, the team assessed that the PSSI chair and executive staffers should step down from their position as a form of responsibility for the Kanjuruhan tragedy. However, Zainudin said the government could not interfere in PSSI's internal affairs so it will be first discussed with FIFA.
