TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The former Youth and Sports Minister Roy Suryo is currently undergoing a court trial that could see him incarcerated for a maximum of 6 years over charges related to alleged hate speech related to ethnicity, religion, race, and societal groups (SARA).

"Possibly 6 years in prison, that’s the maximum," said a member of the Public Prosecutor Team (JPU) of the West Jakarta District Attorney Tri Anggoro Mukti in Jakarta, October 12.

According to Tri, the prosecution team indicted Roy in the form of the first alternative indictment of Article 28 (2) Juncto Article 45 A of Law No19/2016 concerning amendments to Law No 11 on ITE.

"The second indictment is Article 156A of the Criminal Law Act and the third, Article 15 of Law No1/1946 concerning criminal law regulations," he said.

Roy Suryo found himself embroiled in a possible hate speech case when he uploaded a meme of the Borobudur Temple statue that was edited to resemble President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on his Twitter account. His light-hearted post was actually a retweet from another user but was added with his own caption acknowledging protests from the public regarding the government’s plan to raise the entry fee to Borobudur.
