TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Metro Police decided to extend the detention period of blasphemy suspect, Roy Suryo. The former Youth Affairs and Sports Minister was arrested on August 5, and his 20-day detention period is over.
Jakarta Metro Police's PR chief, Sr. Comr. Endra Zulpan, said that to this day Roy Suryo is still being detained and his detention period will be extended. "Clearly, it means that [his custody period] is automatically extended," Endra said, Friday.
Zulpan said that the police have submitted the case file of Roy Suryo's case to the prosecutor's office. The Prosecutor's Office has not provided a response to the case file yet, as they require more time to investigate it.
Roy Suryo was arrested on charges of hate speech and blasphemy after posting a meme of President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's face digitally superimposed on a Buddhist statue. For the investigation, the police have confiscated a number of pieces of evidence, including Roy's mobile phone and twitter account.
Roy was named as a suspect on Friday night, July 22, after being questioned by investigators of the Cyber Sub Directorate since morning.
