TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has inaugurated the use of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) at Gambir Station and the Jakarta Railway Center (JRC) building on Monday, September 26, 2022. The installation of the solar panels, each with has a capacity of 45 kWp (kilowatt peak) and 40 kWp, is the company's effort in to support energy transition to new and renewable energy (EBT).
Sandry Pasambuna, KAI's director of strategic planning and business development, explained that it is also part of a series of programs to commemorate KAI's 77th Anniversary, which adopts the theme "Rise Up Faster, Serve Better".
"KAI wants to participate in greening Indonesia through Environmental, Social, and Governance [ESG] by using EBT to create a better and sustainable business ecosystem," said Sandry at Gambir Station on Monday, September 26, 2022.
For the initial stage, this energy transition was implemented at Gambir Station as the iconic station in Jakarta and the JRC Building, which is one of KAI's main office buildings in addition to its head office in Bandung.
According to Sandry, by using solar panels, the company could save electricity usage in Gambir Station by up to 6.75 percent. "With the assumption that the optimal daily capture of solar energy occurs for four hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m."
KAI planned to raise the solar panels' capacity and install more solar panels in its other assets gradually. "So as to create efficiency in the use and control of energy and the use of EBT can be more widespread in all work areas," said Sandry.
With the installation of this solar panel, Sandry added, KAI also supported the government's program to host the G20 Presidency which prioritizes issues of the Sustainable Energy Transition. This is also in line with the government's policy toward net zero emissions by 2060.
