TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police Traffic unit plans to stop manual traffic ticketing across the Greater Jakarta area, which consists of Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi. However, this plan will likely get backtracked from its initial target of 2022 due to the lack of available traffic cameras.

According to the Metro Jaya Police traffic unit director, Latif Usman, the biggest hurdle lies in the lack of physical infrastructure available on each and every public street.

"There are still some roads that have no ETLE cameras installed, they have to be manually monitored. This year it is not possible because we need the budget, we need planning," said Latif as quoted by Antaranews on Friday, September 23, 2022.

Latif asserted that removing manual ticketing is expected to promote transparency in the enforcement of traffic law and to reduce potential violations by traffic police officers. "So there will be no more abuse of authority, and transparency in law enforcement can be achieved," Latif explained.

The Indonesian National Police traffic unit currently operates 270 static ETLE cameras, 806 ETLE Mobile cameras, and 58 'speed cameras' throughout Indonesia.
