TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Shopee Indonesia's e-commerce platform laid off 3 percent of its employees on Monday, September 19, 2022. Shopee Indonesia head of public affairs Radynal Nataprawira said that the layoffs were part of the company's efficiency.

"With a heavy heart, Shopee Indonesia has had to let go a number of its employees," he said in a written statement, Monday, September 19, 2022.

Radynal said that the decision was a final step that had to be taken by Shopee Indonesia, after making adjustments through several changes to business policies. The global economic conditions, he said, forced Shopee Indonesia to adapt quickly and evaluate business priorities in order to become more efficient.

"This was a very difficult decision," he said.

According to Radynal, the layoff was in line with the company's global focus on achieving independence and sustainability, which are the company's two main focuses on sustaining its business in the midst of global economic uncertainty.

Shopee Indonesia, he said, is committed to providing support for employees affected in the form of severance pay in accordance with statutory provisions with an additional 1 month of salary, based on government regulations.

The fired employees can also still use the company's health insurance facilities until the end of the year with full benefits.

Meanwhile, Shopee Indonesia stated the layoff will not affect business operations and services to all sellers, buyers and partners—including MSMEs and local entrepreneurs in 514 cities and districts in Indonesia—that depend on the platform.
