Employers Association Predicts Wave of Layoffs This Year

11 July 2023 20:44 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) assessed that the wave of layoffs will continue in the country due to a number of factors including slowing demand for export.

“It seems that at least there will be more [number of layoffs compared to last year's number],” Apindo chairperson Shinta Widjaja Kamdani said when met at the Trade Ministry HQ, Central Jakarta, Monday, July 10, 2023.

Last year, Shinta estimated that nearly one million workers in Indonesia were laid off. She explained possible factors that may lead to mass layoffs this year.

“In reality, there are now many aspects. Apart from dropping export demand, illegal goods entering here really affects it,” Shinta opined.

In addition, automation also affects the domestic textile industry. “So, it looks like [layoffs] will increase,” she added.

However, Shinta stopped short of mentioning the exact number of layoffs and asserted that the association must seek a way out.

“We have to prepare where the workers will go after being laid off. Can they shift to another job? If so, there needs more training, more upskilling, more reskilling,” Shinta emphasized.
