TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Flooding and landslides hit several villages in South Aceh on Sunday, May 12, following moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. The extreme weather also caused trees to fall.
“This incident resulted in damage to several public facilities and landslide materials covering the national highway,” said Abdul Muhari, the spokesperson for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), in a written statement on Monday, May 13, 2024.
Muhari explained that based on the report from the South Aceh Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the flood occurred at 16:42 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) with water levels ranging from 20 to 70 centimeters, causing 1,847 families or 8,142 people to be affected.
The flooding and landslides caused damage to at least 1,847 houses, a place of worship, the water embankment protecting the Gampong Lawe Cimanok rice fields at about 30 meters long, three points of the road, fallen trees in several areas, and one bridge in Gampong Lhok Sialang Reyeuk.
Muhari said that the Rapid Response Team of the South Aceh BPBD and the community had started to clear the debris caused by the flood, as well as fallen trees and landslides that blocked road access.
“The floodwaters start to recede in several locations. The fallen trees on the Tapaktuan - Subulussalam national highway have been cleared, and traffic flow has returned to normal,” he said.
