TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Before reports of the government’s planned hike in fuel prices widely circulated, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto claimed that gasoline prices in the country are relatively cheaper than in some Southeast Asia countries.

The question thus, is the statement true? Referring to Global Petrol Prices data as of August 29, 2022, here is the list of the average fuel prices in Southeast Asian countries from the most expensive to the cheapest:

Singapore

The average fuel price is US$1,960 or Rp29,170

Laos

The average fuel price is US$1,706 or Rp25,390

Philippines

The average fuel price is US$1,308 or Rp19,466

Myanmar or Burma

The average fuel price is US$1,307 or Rp19,452

Cambodia

The average fuel price is US$1,288 or Rp19,169

Thailand

The average fuel price is US$1,259 or Rp18,737

Indonesia

The average fuel price is US$1,163 or Rp17,308

Vietnam

The average fuel price is US$1,077 or Rp16,028

Malaysia

The average fuel price is US$0.457 or Rp6,801

Singapore remains the country with the highest average price of fuel in Southeast Asia. That way, it can be concluded that only Vietnam and Malaysia have lower average fuel prices than Indonesia.
