2,000 Inmates in Jakarta Prisons Receive Independence Remission

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In commemoration of the Indonesian independence, 2,615 inmates from the Class 1A Salemba prison (Rutan Salemba) and Central Jakarta Class IIA penitentiary were eligible for reduced sentences under the special independence remission.

Head of the Salemba Jail, Fonika Affandi, said of 3,309 total inmates in the facility, 809 inmates received reduced sentences or 54 percent.

"The number of inmates at the Rutan Salemba is only 1,524 people, 809 of whom received a remission, while 1,785 are prisoners from other jails," said Fonika on August 17, Antaranews reported.

Forty-seven inmates were eligible for immediate release, while 762 others receiving remission ranging from 1 month to 6 months.

Meanwhile, the head of the Salemba Prison, Yosafat Rizanto, said there were 1,806 inmates who received remission, with 16 of them would be immediately free. He added that there were actually 61 other prisoners who can get free remission but they have to undergo an extended prison term due to subsidiary dependents or fines.
