TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measured at magnitude 5.1 on the Richter scale struck the North Sumatra region of Nias, at around 00:39 Indonesia Western Time (WIB) on Friday, August 5. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the center of the quake was 173 kilometers off Teluk Dalam City, North Sumatra.

In a statement, the agency’s head of earthquake and tsunami center Daryono wrote that based on the epicenter and hypocenter, the quake is classified as a shallow one caused by deformation in the Indo-Australia outer rise plate.

“The quake has a strike-slip mechanism,” said Daryono.

Initial reports suggest there were no damages caused by the earthquake and based on the BMKG's analysis, it will not trigger a tsunami.

BMKG asks the public to remain calm and not affected by baseless issues. The people are also asked to avoid cracked or damaged buildings caused by the quake.
