TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) member Jamaluddin Lamanda lamented the city’s decision to prioritize building a massive stadium in the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) instead of completing an intermediate treatment facility (ITF) to overcome Jakarta’s problematic relationship with waste management.

Lamanda argues that the construction of supporting sports facilities can be postponed as trash management has a wider effect on the capital city’s population livelihood.

“If there was a census done on Jakartans, [I believe] an ITF is far more important than JIS,” said Lamanda in Monday’s meeting on waste management at the DPRD headquarters.

He openly found it regrettable that the ITF Sunter project led by city-owned enterprise Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro) since 2018 is still far from completion despite numerous headlines on the project’s groundbreaking.

The legislator suggested the ITF project be postponed until the end of the term for Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan and called for a new funding scheme to be established for the project once the governor steps down.

“We could just ultimatum the governor whose term ends in October 2022, and stop the project if no meaningful development is made. Make a new plan with the city’s regional budget, which is able [to fund the project],” said Lamanda.

Meanwhile, Democratic Party DPRD member Ferrial Sofyan said that it is better for the new governor to continue the waste ITF project under a new APBD scheme because Anies Baswedan's term of office would end in October 2022.

The Sunter ITF is one of four ITF projects planned to be built in the city, which aims to reduce up to 8,000 tons of trash sent out of the city to the integrated waste management facility (TPST) Bantargebang in Bekasi.
