Tangerang Govt Declares Emergency on Rawa Kucing Landfill Fire

23 October 2023 21:02 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tangerang Mayor Arief Rachardiono Wismansyah declared the fire situation at Rawa Kucing Landfill an emergency on Monday, October 23, 2023.

By declaring an emergency on the situation, Arief said, the city government received aid from the central government through the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). "Manggala Agni Team from the ministry and the water bombing team from BNPB have been deployed in the location today," he said.

The fire broke out last Friday, Arief reported. Thick, black smoke that emerged from the 34 hectares of landfill owned by the city government not only disrupted surrounding residents but hindered aviation activities at Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

Since Monday morning, Arief said, the situation at Rawa Kucing Landfill has been controlled, with the remaining fire only located at Gate 3. Arief hoped that the air from the central government would help extinguish the fire completely.

The Head of Protocol and Government Communication Department of Tangerang Mualim mentioned at least two extinguishing scenarios at the Rawa Kucing Landfill today. "These two scenarios are conducted by BNPB and the Ministry," he said when called by Tempo this morning.

The water-bombing team from BNPB deployed one helicopter while the ministry's team conducted deep injection into the pile of waste to extinguish the fire.
