6 M Earthquake Hits Bengkulu's Enggano Island Early Today

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measuring at 6.0 magnitudes in the Richter scale jolted Enggano Island of Bengkulu in the early hours of today, May 17, 2022, at 01:58 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) declared that the quake had no potential to trigger a tsunami.

Through its official website, the agency stated that the quake’s epicenter was located at 5.40 degrees south latitude, 101.81 degrees east longitude or 51 km southwest of Enggano Island. It occurred at a depth of 10 km under the sea.

The tremor was felt quite strongly by nearly everyone and many awakened in Enggano Island as it was at level V of the MMI scale. The light shaking was reported in Bengkulu City and North Bengkulu Regency at MMI level IV and a weaker intensity in Kepahiang Regency and Rejang Lebong Regency.

A number of citizens also responded to the earthquake news published by BMKG via its social media, reporting that the shaking was also felt in North Sumatra, South Sumatra, and Lampung.
