Aceh Hit By M 5.0 Earthquake: BMKG

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Thursday announced that Aceh, located in the northern part of the Sumatra island, was hit by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake that originated 61 kilometers off the coast of Calang and at the depth of 47 kilometers beneath the ocean floor.
According to the BMKG head of earthquake and tsunami, Bambang Setiap Prayitno, the quake that happened just after midnight (00:27 WIB) was due to thrust fault activities.
The quake itself was categorized as III on the MI scale and was felt in Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar, and Aceh Jaya. Based on the agency’s analysis, this quake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami and there were no aftershocks detected minutes after it happened.
