TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State Secretary and Germany’s Foreign Affairs special envoy for international climate action Jennifer Morgan in a press conference on Wednesday in Jakarta said she is confident that Germany and Indonesia would manage the global transition toward clean renewable energy.

As the G7 and G20 events take place in parallel this year, the two countries have increased their bilateral partnership toward this goal. In Morgan’s statement from her German Embassy service house in South Jakarta, she said this is a moment for stakeholders to go beyond their comfort zone.

"I feel the momentum is here for us to step up together and act to take over our political leadership, our G7, and our G20. This is a moment for all of us to go beyond our comfort zones," said Morgan on May 11.

The environmental activist arrived in Indonesia on May 9, and during her visit had met with a number of Indonesian government representatives such as Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, the Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya.

Germany is ready to strengthen collaboration with Indonesia to accelerate action toward sustainable energy, either by expanding cooperation in the fields of climate, energy, and the environment or by sharing Germany's own experiences with energy transitions and the phase-out of coal-fired power plants.

Morgan argues, that the main lesson about renewable energy for Germany is to think deeply and work out the details of its implementation. It is the most crucial part because it must also be able to overcome bureaucratic obstacles.

“This is an extraordinary transformation and we must ensure that we do it fairly and affordably,” she explained.

In an online discussion with the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) on Monday, Morgan suggested that the G20 advance with its climate mission, despite the challenges of global uncertainty. Mainly, the impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
