Merapi Hot Clouds Observed Again After A Week of Inactivity

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Yogyakarta Research and Technological Development for Geological Disaster Agency (BPPTKG) on Tuesday announced that hot clouds have been observed from Merapi this week after nearly a week of inactivity from the stratovolcano on the border of Yogyakarta and Central Java provinces.
According to the agency, hot clouds were absent during the April 30 - May 7 period and the latest observation of the hot clouds came on May 8th and May 10th. The recent hot clouds were accompanied by rainfall in the region.
“On the 8th of May there was one occurrence with the hot clouds reaching a sliding distance of 2,000 meters and on May 10th it happened again reaching 1,800 meters in distance towards the same direction, Southwest,” said BPPTKG head Hanik Humaida on Tuesday.
The agency also stated that Merapi produced 30 incandescent lava streams during one entire day on May 1. As of current, Merapi’s activities mean that the mountain is still n Level III alert.
“There were 32 times lava streams came out of the mountain peak that launched to a maximum distance of 2,000 meters to the Southwest,” Hanik said.
