M6.0 Earthquake Strikes Halmahera; No Tsunami Detected

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Tuesday reported a magnitude 6.0 earthquake (previously reported as 5.9) had hit the region of Halmahera in North Maluku in the morning of April 5.

The agency reports that the quake’s epicenter comes from off the coast of Maluku, 108 kilometers Northwest of West Halmahera.

BMKG called for local residents to prepare for possible aftershocks but assured them that the tsunami warning had not been triggered. The quake is felt at a much lower intensity at Tobelo, Bitung, and Siau.

The Halmahera earthquake is the second quake detected today with the first one being a magnitude 3.5 quake that struck Bukittinggi in West Sumatra originating 13 kilometers northwest of Bukittinggi.
