TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned oil and gas firm Pertamina’s subsidiary, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, recorded a shift in gasoline consumption from Pertamax to Pertalite at 10 to 15 percent as a consequence of the price hike of the RON 92 type fuel on April 1, 2022.

“It is perhaps because [people] are shocked by the price hike,” said Director of Pertamina Patra Niaga Alfian Nasution in CNBC's Energy Corner broadcast in Jakarta, Monday, April 4.

On April 1, Pertamina increased the price of Pertamax from Rp9,000-9,400 per liter to Rp12,500-13,000 per liter due to the increased price of global crude oil.

The decision triggered consumers to switch to purchasing Pertalite, which is sold cheaper at only Rp7,650 per liter. This led to the soaring consumption of the RON 90 type gasoline and stock shortages in a number of regions.

Alfian predicted that the decline in Pertamax consumption would be temporary as the Indonesian people are now aware of the quality of Pertamax gasoline which produces lower carbon emission.

Pertamina also provided various special programs to keep Pertamax consumers from switching to Pertalite and continued to educate the public to choose high-quality and environmentally-friendly fuel.
