TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Syafrin Liputo, on Wednesday said the bike lane spread across Jakarta roads is set to be extended to 20 new locations, adding the total length to 195.6 kilometers in 2022. The total budget for this bike lane extension is reportedly to reach Rp119 billion.
“[The budget] will be used to cover the planning stage, monitoring, up to the construction of the bike lane itself,” said Syafrin on March 30.
In a meeting held by the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) Commission B on Thursday last week, the Jakarta transportation agency head said people using bicycles for mobility reasons had spiked by 1,000 percent since 2019. Therefore, adding bike lanes is the logical step to accommodate cyclists.
In 2021, Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan said that he intended to construct 170 kilometers worth of bike lanes in the capital city. He also planned to introduce a number of pop-up bike lanes that may operate during the weekends or national holidays.
