Jakarta to Build 190 Km Bike Lane This Year

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Transportation Department targets to build a bike lane spanning 190 kilometers in the capital city in 2022.
"It is included in RPJMD (Regional Medium Term Development Plan) and regional strategic activities," said the chief of Jakarta Transportation Department Syafrin Liputo after a meeting with Commission B at Jakarta regional legislator (DPRD) office on Thursday, January 20, as quoted by Antara.
He said that the expansion of the track aimed at accommodating the high interest of the public in transporting by bicycle for sport or work.
In the meeting, Syafrin mentioned that there was an increase in the number of cyclists in 2019 in Jakarta at 1,000 percent. "From previously only five to six [cyclists], now it becomes 100 cyclists every morning that go 'bike to work'," he added.
Syafrin explained that bike lane was one of the focuses of RPJMD fulfillment regarding transportation that would be completed this year.
Previously, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan targeted to build 170 kilometers bike lane in the capital city until 2021.
As of June 2021, the total Jakarta bike lanes reached 63 kilometers. One of the famous ones is the permanent lane along the Thamrin-Sudirman area in Central Jakarta- South Jakarta.
