TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said the new capital city will apply a green smart city concept. He ensured that almost all activities will be supported by an environmentally friendly system. Besides, the city will be friendly to pedestrians and cyclists.

“People who like walking are welcomed to move to the new capital. Those who like cycling should also move to the new capital. Those who like to ride a car, especially fossil-fuel ones, don't move to the new capital,” said the President in Gondangdia, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, Feb. 22.

He explained 80 percent of vehicles in the new capital will be mass transportation and the rest 20 percent will be private vehicles. With the system, he added, traveling around the city will only take a very short time by using public transportation.

“Reaching one point to another in the new capital city is planned to only take 10 minutes. So that will be a 10-minute city,” the state head remarked.

The government’s plan to relocate the capital city from Jakarta to East Kalimantan is getting more well-prepared after Law No 3 of 2022 concerning the state capital authority was ratified by Jokowi. The regulation stipulates the capital areas, sources of regional income, up to the election of the new capital authority head.

Main Expert Staff at the Presidential Office Wandy Tuturoong said derivative rules in the form of presidential decrees were estimated to be passed in March or April. One of them will determine the new capital authority head.
