TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo said the development of the country’s new capital city in North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan, aimed at more than just an administrative office, but rather a smart city that served as a global magnet and innovation hub.

The President touched on this matter on his speech at the 67th Dies Natalis celebration of Parahyangan University on Monday, January 17, 2022.

“The new capital city (IKN) is more than just a city teeming with administrative offices, but we want to develop a new smart metropolis that can become a magnet, a global talent magnet, and an innovation hub,” the President said.

Jokowi explained massive transformation was forthcoming in the new capital city and underscored the development of the IKN was more than just physical relocation of government offices.

According to Jokowi, the IKN development sought to create a new, competitive city on the global stage and construct a new locomotive for national transformation towards Indonesia that is based on innovation, technology, and green economy.

The President said the development must become a momentum to build a healthy, efficient and productive city, and that plans pertaining to the IKN had been prudently pondered, including its people’s mobility.

“It will be close to anywhere. Its people can go by bike or on foot because of the zero emissions. There will be security, heath and education services of global class. These are what we imagine,” Jokowi said
