TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Development Planning Minister or Bappenas Head Suharso Monoarfa said President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on Friday last week, Jan. 14, decided to name Nusantara for the new capital city in East Kalimantan.
“I just received confirmation from President Jokowi on Friday (Jan. 14, 2022) and he said the national capital is called Nusantara,” said Suharso during a meeting with the working committee (Panja) for the new capital bill (RUU IKN)) at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, today, Jan. 17.
Suharso said one of the reasons is because the name Nusantara, which means archipelago, has been known for a long time and is internationally iconic. Moreover, it is simple and accurately describes the archipelago. “I'm sure we all agree with the name, Nusantara,” he remarked.
The working committee's chairman, Ahmad Doli Kurnia, asked the government to prepare more explanations for the naming as it is necessary to increase public knowledge albeit the committee has agreed on it.
“I also asked the government to prepare the explanations so that Article 1 will not cause multiple interpretations. I assess that the new capital city is the status, but its name is Nusantara,” Doli concluded.
