TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Home Affairs Ministry directorate general of population and civil registry warned people against uploading selfie images of themselves holding an electronic ID card (e-KTP) and offering it as non-fungible tokens or NFT.

This comes following the NFT “gold rush” craze sparked by the success of Indonesian college teenager Sultan Gustaf Al Ghozali who sold his selfie time lapse as an NFT at OpenSea titled “Ghozali Everyday..” The teen fetched over USD1 million for his NFT.

Director general Zudan Arif Fakrulloh asserts that spreading one’s sensitive data would expose the person who uploaded it to numerous potential digital crimes such as being used for online lending and other economic transactional activities.

“It is very prone to fraud and crimes by data scavengers,” said Zudan in a statement on Sunday, January 16,

He reminded that images of one’s ID card should only be uploaded to trustable financial, banking or non-banking sites that can guarantee the safety of such data. The director general believes people need to be better educated on personal data protection.

Zudan said there are legal sanctions for those who distribute civil registry data that involve imprisonment up to 10 years and legal fines reaching Rp1 billion.
