TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The South Sumatra Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) asked residents living near Mount Dempo in Pagaralam to stay vigilant as the mountain’s alert status was raised to level II Waspada or Caution on Friday, Jan. 7, following the rising volcanic activity.

The agency’s head of the emergency handling unit, Ansori, said the general public was prohibited from doing activities within a one-kilometer radius of the crater.

He also suggested residents of Empat Lawang Regency, Pagaralam City, and Lahat Regency to keep updated about the mountain’s activities through reliable sources.

“We hope that residents around Mount Dempo will continue to monitor information related to this volcanic activity,” said Ansori in Palembang, Monday, January 10.

The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) increased the alert status of Mount Dempo from Level I (Normal) to Level II (Waspada/Caution) on January 7, 2022.

The last eruption of Mount Dempo occurred on January 1, 2009.
