TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) on Wednesday recorded 10 incandescent lava spewing out of Mount Merapi for 6 hours which flowed 1,700 meters Southwest.

"There were 10 instances of incandescent lava observed, the maximum sliding distance is 1,700 meters to the southwest," said Yogyakarta BPPTKG Hanik Humaida on January 5.

Based on the latest seismic data, there were 59 avalanches and one gust earthquake with an amplitude of 3 mm for 20.6 seconds, and eight multiphase earthquakes with an amplitude of 3-10 mm for 5.8-8.6 seconds.

As of December 24, 2021, the BPPTKG’s records show Merapi’s southwest lava dome was 1.65 million cubic meters with a growth rate of 5,000 cubic meters per day. However, this has increased as its dome now reaches 3 million cubic meters with a growth rate of 2,000 cubic meters per day.

The agency has still set the Level III Alert status for the active volcanic mountain located on the border between the province of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The lava flow and hot clouds from Mount Merapi are estimated to impact areas in the southeast-southwest sector for a maximum of three kilometers.
