TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Member of Commission VII of the House of Representatives (DPR) Syaikhul Islam Ali assessed that the government could extend the ban on coal exports if necessary until domestic needs are truly met.

According to him, the policy of banning the export of fossil fuels is closely related to the issue of maintaining energy security in the country.

“This is not about whether or not we can export commodities which is debatable, but it is a matter of our energy security which is very vulnerable,” said Syaikhul in a written statement, Wednesday, January 5.

Therefore, the legislator from the National Awakening Party (PKB) faction asked the government not to rush to lift the ban and opined that the policy should be continued.

As reported previously, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources temporarily banned coal exports from January 1 to 31, 2022, due to concerns over the energy crisis in the country.

The policy was taken as the state-run electricity firm PLN is grappling with a coal deficit, which is feared to threaten the supply of electricity for 10 million customers.
