TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Japanese government voiced objections to Indonesia’s ban on coal export, asking to cancel the ban. Japan has thus far imported coal high calorific value (HCV).

This type is different from coal low calorific value which is exclusively intended for power plants owned by the state-run electricity company or PLN. Thus, Japan argued that HCV exports to their country did not have a significant impact on coal supply to PLN.

“So I hope that the ban on coal exports to Japan be lifted immediately,” said the Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia, Kanasugi Kenji, in a letter to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif on January 4.

Earlier, the ESDM Ministry’s Director-General of Mineral and Coal, Ridwan Djamaluddin, prohibited the shipment of coal for export for a month, from January 1 to 31, 2022, due to the lack of coal supply for local power plants, one of which belonging to PLN.
