TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Logistics startup Paxel launched the PaxelRecycle service as a form of its responsibility for waste management of e-commerce packaging in line with the rise in online shopping.

“Collaborating with environmental startup Waste4Change, we launch the PaxelRecycle service to help Indonesia meet the COP26 recommendations and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), besides overcoming negative impacts of e-commerce growth on the environment,” said Paxel co-founder Zaldy Ilham Masita in a release received by Tempo, Friday, November 26.

Based on the results of the global climate summits dubbed COP26 in which every country is committed to reaching zero carbon emissions, Zaldy opined that the implementation of zero waste living is the first step that can be taken by individuals.

“Let’s become e-commerce consumers who care about the earth and create a circular economy for e-commerce,” Zaldy said.

The growth of online shopping has created negative impacts on the environment over the last 10 years. According to Waste4Change managing director M. Bijaksana Junerosano, one of the impacts is the lack ability of the final disposal site to accommodate waste, so a new site is needed.

“By collaborating with Paxel, we can increase the amount of recycled waste, minimize the burden on landfills, and open new jobs in the environmentally-friendly sector or what we call green jobs,” said Sano.

It was predicted that e-commerce waste would increase by 40 percent by 2030. Indonesia recorded more than six million online shopping packages, which are equal to 9,000 tons of waste, per day. The figures exclude waste from food delivery services.

The PaxelRecycle service can be accessed through the Paxel mobile app. The Hero or courier will pick up the waste packaging then deliver it directly to the waste bank managed by Waste4Change for reuse or recycling purposes.

In the early stages, PaxelRecycle will accept cardboards, bubble wraps, plastic bottles, glass bottles (besides paint, mosquito repellent, and other toxic substances) in the Greater Jakarta and the South Tangerang areas.
