TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) official Rian Sarsono said strong winds caused by Tropical Cyclone Paddy would no longer threaten the capital as it moved away from Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) areas.

“Based on BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency) data, the strong winds have gone and disappeared today,” said Rian in Jakarta, Wednesday, November 24.

BMKG reported that the tropical cyclone is now in the Indian Ocean, south of Central Java. The cyclone was measured at 997 millibars with maximum wind speeds of 75 kilometers per hour.

Yesterday, powerful winds hit Jakarta and its surrounding regions. Jakarta BPBD recorded 26 fallen trees in five districts, including in the Thousand Islands. The agency explained that the strong winds were generated by a fairly strong air mass flow from the Indian Ocean, in the west of Banten, to the eastern areas until the north of Tangerang and Jakarta.

BMKG earlier forecasted that the phenomenon will decrease in the next 24 hours as the tropical cyclone weakens.

However, Jakarta BPBD still readies its personnel to anticipate disasters during the current rainy season. The agency also coordinates with the Environment Agency and the City Parks and Forests Agency to trim old trees that are prone to falling during heavy rain and strong winds.
