TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned of the potential for tidal flooding in the north coast of Java Island, including the north coast of Jakarta on November 18-25.

The agency’s head of the center for marine meteorology Eko Prasetyo in a press release in Surabaya, Wednesday, November 17, said that tidal flooding is a common phenomenon occurring on the north coast of Java.

“However, the high tides during the full moon phase along with rainfall will cause a more significant increase in the height of tidal floods,” Eko explained.

Based on the monitoring on water level and tidal predictions, areas near the north coast of Java, such as Tangerang, Jakarta, Bekasi, Kerawang, Subang, Indramayu, Cirebon, Brebes, Pemalang, Pekalongan, Batang, Kendal, Semarang, Demak. Jepara, Gresik are urged to remain alert of possible tidal flooding.

“It is forecasted to occur between November 18-25, 2021, in the morning until the afternoon, while the potential for heavy rain will occur on November 19-23, 2021 in the afternoon and evening,” he said.

Eko said the potential for this tidal flood, in general, could disrupt the daily activities of people residing around the port and coast. People are asked to stay vigilant to anticipate the impact of tidal flooding and get updates on weather information from the BMKG.

“Such as via Call Center 021-6546315/18, BMKG’s Call Center 196, http://maritim.bmkg.go.id, or Twitter and Instagram @BMKGmaritim,” he concluded.
